Eva Löfdahl »An Audile Double«

Löfdahl invokes the sacred with the profane, employing materials that are often modest and close to hand – modified everyday objects like wire rods, magnets, or string, supported in plaster or polystyrene. The act of making the work is simultaneously a way to get to grips with its subject and is an attempt to make the abstract and diffuse concrete and graspable.

Some of the recent works in An Audile Double were presented together with older ones in Löfdahl’s recent exhibition The Flow of Everything at Marabouparken (2024). Two pairs of wall-mounted hemispheres bear the group title All Worlds Emit. Those sub-titled C & D are surfaced in mirror shards and flax fibre, resulting in a cratered fractal mosaic. A & B are covered in a collage of map fragments that create a meta-geography. Puzzled together without an overview, roads, waterways and hills congregate into a new landscape. These strange topographies suggest semi-familiar planets; the one perhaps terrestrial in the eyes of a newcomer, the other a crystalline lunar landscape.

The exhibition also contains a new comprehensive large-scale work entitled Grains of Truth. Installed horizontally, transversing the gallery’s rooms in alternating rows, like notes in sheet music, and evoking a portrait gallery, the installation comprises a series of 33 photographs of jellyfish. Löfdahl photographed the jellyfish beached and liquifying in the sun over the course of three summers. The Latin name for this species of common jellyfish is Aurelia aurita. Aurelia means gold, golden. Aurita refers to ears, listening.

This is Löfdahl’s eighth solo exhibition at Galerie Nordenhake since 1993. In 2013 she received Sweden's Fine Arts Fund Grand Award and in 1997 Moderna Museet's Sculpture Prize. Among these and other recognitions, she is the recipient of the 2025 Sergel Prize.
