Cecilia Edefalk »I'M NOT HERE. I'M DREAMING«
Stockholm, May 18, 2024 - June 20, 2024
Galerie Nordenhake Stockholm presents its first solo exhibition at the gallery with renowned Swedish artist Cecilia Edefalk. Titled, I’m Not Here. I’m Dreaming, the exhibition comprises a series of new paintings and a bronze sculpture.
The motif for this suite of paintings originates in a watercolour by the National Romantic Gothenburg painter Carl Wilhelmson (1866–1928) of a woman on a rocky coastline overlooking a west coast seascape. Using thinned tempera and cobalt-blue pigment, Edefalk re-enacts this motif across a group of variously-sized canvases. Edefalk paints loosely and lightly; even the large-scale paintings appear like watercolour. Wilhelmson’s female protagonist, seen from behind, becomes Edefalk’s, in an echoing, ongoing state of disappearance.
The ethereal has long been a theme in Edefalk's work. Even her most present subjects have an otherworldly quality. Her familiar strategy of repetition seems to undermine an experience of here-ness, rather than reinforce it. However in the act of painting Edefalk follows an ethos of now-ness, and adheres to Rick Rubin’s maxim to “be attentive to the moment, not to be in the future, and not in the past, but only what is happening right now.”
An important aspect of Edefalk’s approach and process is that she “connects” and receives counsel from deceased artists. In this case Wilhelmson himself has advised on how to carry out her paintings. Notes from her seances are transcribed and can be found below.
Bronze Drawing, a freestanding sculpture cast from a spindly part of a vine, rhythmically interacts with the paintings in the exhibition: its materiality dissolved into an abstract spatial drawing
