Torsten Andersson
Torsten Andersson was born in South Sweden in 1926 and is celebrated as one of Sweden's most influential modern artists. His career as a painter began with his first exhibitions in the 1950s. In 1960, Andersson became the youngest professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, a position he held until 1966. Following his tenure, he returned to South Sweden, where he lived and worked until his passing in 2009.
During his lifetime, Torsten Andersson’s artwork was internationally recognized, with exhibitions at prestigious institutions and biennials. He participated in the 32nd Venice Biennale in 1964 and the São Paulo Biennial in 1959 and 1983. Retrospective exhibitions of his work were held at Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1986) and Malmö Konsthall (1987). His paintings were also featured in solo and group exhibitions at Göteborgs Konstmuseum (2008), Zeno X Gallery, Antwerp (2003), Kunstmuseum Bonn (1999), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk (1997), Malmö Konstmuseum (1995), and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1981), among others.
In recent years, Andersson's legacy has continued through significant exhibitions at Tomelilla Konsthall, Tomelilla, Sweden (2022); Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin, Germany (2019); and Galerie Nordenhake, Stockholm, Sweden (2018). These exhibitions have reinforced his reputation among museums and art collectors as a vital figure in Scandinavian modern art.
The Torsten Andersson Foundation, established by the artist in 2007, is compiling a digital catalogue raisonné of his paintings from 1952 to 2009. Work on the project began in 2021, with Sofia Bertilsson (MFA, member of ICRA.art) serving as editor. The goal of this digital catalogue raisonné is to advance the study of Torsten Andersson’s work and preserve his artistic legacy.
