Rémy Zaugg

Rémy Zaugg was born in 1943 in Courgenay, Switzerland, and died in 2005. He participated in Skulptur Projekte Münster (1987), the Carnegie International, Pittsburg (1995) and documenta 7, Kassel (1982). Kunstmuseum Basel dedicated a major retrospective to his work in 2020. He had solo exhibitions at Reina Sofía, Madrid (2016), Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Siegen (2015), Schaulager Basel (2004), Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt/Main (2002), Kunsthalle Bern (2000), Kunsthalle Basel (1999, 1989, 1980), Kröller-Möller Museum, Otterlo (1996),Museum Folkwang, Essen (1989), Musée d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1991, 1988), Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Amsterdam (1984), and Kunstmuseum Basel (1972).
His work has been shown internationally in numerous group exhibitions. Next to his artistic practice Zaugg was a prolific writer and published many theoretical texts, such as “Die List der Unschuld: Das Wahrnehmen einer Skulptur” (1982), “Für das Kunstwerk: Kunstmuseum Bern, Atelier 5“ (1982), “Das Kunstmuseum, das ich mir erträume, oder Der Ort des Werkes und des Menschen” (1987), “Die Entstehung eines Bildwerkes” (1990) and “Voir Mort” (1990).
In 2005 a comprehensive monograph by Gerhard Mack was published by Fondation Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean Luxembourg. 
Zaugg’s collaboration with architects Herzog & de Meuron has resulted in several publications and almost 15 architectural works, for instance the design of Tate Modern London. Galerie Nordenhake presented its first solo exhibition with the artist in 1998 and has since exhibited him in 2000, 2003 and 2005.
A comprehensive monograph on his work was published by Snoeck Verlag in 2022.
